ANCHORAGE (AP) -- Kotzebue Electric Association has received national recognition for its windpower plant, which has reduced Kotzebue's dependence on diesel.
The National Rural Electric Cooperative Association presented the ''Community Service Network Award'' to Kotzebue Electric March 11 at the group's annual meeting in Dallas. The award recognizes community service and grass-roots advocacy.
Kotzebue Electric runs an array of wind generators 30 miles north of the Arctic Circle. The generators are a nationally known wind research center.
The utility also operates a small wind plant in Wales, an Eskimo village at the western tip of the Seward Peninsula.
