Oilers sign Florida Atlantic junior

Mike Cox of Florida Atlantic University recently agreed to join the Oilers for the 2002 Alaska Baseball League season. The 6-foot-1 junior hails from Sarasota, Fla.

For the third consecutive week, a member of the upcoming Oilers team has been rewarded with league honors as Cox was named the Trans Atlantic Athletic Conference/Atlanta Sun Player of the Week for his play last week. The right-handed-hitting third baseman batted .400 on the week with five home runs and 11 RBIs while hitting back-to-back homers in consecutive games. On the season, Cox is hitting .341 with 11 home runs and 29 RBIs in the Owls' first 23 games.

Roger Lincoln, Stetson University reliever, continues to compile great numbers. To date, the 5-10 junior left-hander has struck out 45 batters while only walking eight in 29 innings of pitching. Lincoln has a 3-1 record with three saves.

Remember to get your tickets for the Oilers 2002 "Gusher" soon. Tickets for the June 1 event are limited to 500 and the annual fund-raiser and dinner/dance is nearly always a sellout. For more information, call the Oilers at 283-7133 or stop by the office on the corner of Cook and Main streets in Kenai.

Oilers Corner is submitted during the offseason by Mike Baxter, the baseball operations manager for the Alaska Baseball League team.
