Posted: Friday, March 22, 2002

The Metlakatla boys put three players in double figures to upset third-ranked Nikiski 62-58 Thursday in the first round of the Class 3A state tournament at the Sullivan Arena in Anchorage.

Metlakatla, which has been a giant-killer thus far in the postseason, will try its luck against second-ranked Valdez in the semifinals today.

Nikiski, meanwhile, drops into the fourth-place bracket for a matchup with Nome at 8 a.m. today.

Chris Bryant, a 6-foot-1 sophomore guard for Metlakatla, had been scoring in the 30s regularly, but Nikiski was able to hold him to 15 points.

However, other Chiefs stepped up to fill the void. Chevy Hayward came through with 17 points for Metlakatla, while Apollo Marsden pitched in with 11.

Nikiski senior David Holloway paced all scorers with 26 points, while Josh Reilly added 10 points for the Bulldogs.
