Ninilchik wins, CIA loses at state

Posted: Wednesday, March 22, 2006

The Ninilchik School girls high school basketball team took a step toward regaining the class 2A crown Tuesday, opening the state championship tournament with a 40-25 win over Galena Tuesday at Service High School in Anchorage.

Also Tuesday, the Cook Inlet Academy boys missed out on a chance to repeat as 2A champs, dropping a 51-50 heartbreaker to Yakutat in the opening round of the tournament.

After a slow first half — the Wolverines led 11-6 after two quarters of play — Ninilchik was able to put some space between themselves and the Hawks in the third quarter, outscoring Galena 19-10 in the frame.

The Wolverines had a balanced scoring effort, with Kendra Moerlein netting nine points, Krista Leman and Kjersten Skjold each scoring eight, Ashley Bartolowits scoring six, Lauren Wolford netting five and Heidi Skjold chipping in with four points.

Moerlein also picked up three steals and eight rebounds for the Wolverines.

Ninilchik moves on to the Sullivan Arena to face Tikigaq (Point Hope) in the semifinals today at 3:30 p.m. The Harpoonerettes, perennial state contenders, advanced to the semifinals with a 43-40 win over Yakutat.
