ANCHORAGE (AP) -- A grand jury in Palmer indicted a 21-year-old Big Lake man Wednesday in the recent death of his infant daughter, Alaska State Troopers said.

John C. Nichols was charged with second degree murder in the death of his 7-month-old daughter, Tyler Nichols, according to troopers.

The infant was not breathing when authorities were called March 5, troopers said. The child was taken to Valley Hospital then medivaced to Providence Alaska Medical Center, where she was declared brain dead the following day and disconnected from life support equipment, said trooper spokesman Greg Wilkinson.

A trooper investigation found the child died as a result of head injuries with abnormal brain hemorrhaging, according to Wilkinson. He said Nichols was the only adult present when the alleged abuse occurred.

Nichols was being held Wednesday on $100,000 bail, Wilkinson said.
