HAINES (AP) -- Children in Haines are getting a new playground this summer, and the city of Haines needs volunteers to build it.
Organizers are looking for three shifts of 100 people a day to work from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. from May 14-18 to help build the wooden playground at Tlingit Park. The park is scheduled to open May 19.
The project originated in fall 2000 to provide a safe playground for children under 5 years old. The community originally planned to build only the playground but later decided to improve the existing park.
The $425,000 project is funded by a 50-50 matching grant through the state Division Parks and Outdoor Recreation's Land and Water Conservation Fund.
The community has raised about $20,000 for the project and will provide more than $200,000 in labor and donated materials.
The grant gives the borough two years to complete the project.
