Longtime Soldotna resident Edward "Ed" Eugene Daly died Sunday, March 20, 2005, at his home of pancreatic cancer. He was 58.

A celebration of Mr. Daly's life will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, March 26, at the Soldotna United Methodist Church, 158 S. Binkley in Soldotna. Pastor Dale Kelley will officiate. Military honors will be performed by VFW Post No. 10046 and American Legion Post No. 20. A gathering will immediately follow the services at the church.

Mr. Daly was born March 28, 1946, in Brooklyn, N.Y. His family moved to Kansas City, Kan., when he was 13. He entered into the U.S. Navy in 1966 and served in Vietnam until he was honorably discharged in 1970. Among his military honors, he was awarded the Purple Heart. He worked in the oil fields in Texas and Oklahoma. He also worked in Chignik from the mid-1970s through 1985.

He had traveled to Seattle in 1985, where he met his wife, Terri, and they were married Sept. 27, 1986. Mr. Daly returned to Alaska and worked for Alaska Correctional Industries at Wildwood from 1990 to the present as a production manager II.

He enjoyed hunting fishing, camping with his family and scouting trips. Mr. Daly was scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 672, was inducted into the Order of the Arrow and recently received the Vigil Honor, Order of the Arrow, along with the District Award of Merit.

"Dad was the type of dad who was always there for his family. He was always there to lend a hand to anyone who needed it. He gave his younger daughter his quick wit and humor. 'Environment over heredity.' Ed and his son shared their loved of the outdoors together. Because of the strong family unit we formed, we will be able to carry on, even though Ed will be deeply missed," his family said.

Mr. Daly was preceded in death by his mother and father, Eugene and Doris Daly; aunts, Margaret and Julia Daly; and grandfather, Patrick Daly.

He is survived by his wife of 18 years, Terri of Soldotna; daughter and son-in-law, Emily and Dustin McBride of Bethel; daughter, Kari and son, Zachary, both of Soldotna; sister and brother-in-law, Cathi and Dave Schwartz of Leawood, Kan.; brothers-in-law, Gary Martin of Seattle, Kevin and his wife, Renet Martin, Steve and his wife, Erica Martin, and Dan Martin all of Tucson, Ariz.; nieces, Erin Schwartz of Tahoe, Colo., Courtney Schwartz of Chicago, Abby Schwartz of Leawood, Kelly and Kristyn Martin of Bend, Ore., and Jaycie Martin of Tucson; and nephew, Q Martin of Tucson.
