Area students named to dean's lists

* Kenai resident Hannah Cristine Watkins was named to the dean's list at University of Rochester.

Watkins is a freshman majoring in biomedical engineering. She is the daughter of Jed and Chris Watkins and a graduate of Kenai Central High School.

* Kenai resident Julianne Petty was named to the dean's list at Harding University. Petty is a sophomore.

Youth court offered

Classes for new Youth Court attorneys will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays beginning this week until May 13 at the old Kenai Courthouse. Area students in seventh grade or older may take the free class. Successful completion of the program and passing the Kenai Peninsula Youth Court Bar Exam qualify students to serve in actual misdemeanor and alcohol cases involving their peers. FASD training offered

A two-day community training on Fetal Alcohol Spectrum disorders titled "Children with FASD: Navigating the Rapids to Adult Life" will be presented by Deb Evensen, from 4 to 8 p.m. March 28 and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 29 at the Kenai Visitors and Cultural Center. The cost is $20. A graduate UAA credit will be available at a separate cost. It is open to the public. Health center plans closure, training

The Kenai Public Health Center will be closed March 31.

The nurses will be training April 1 through 3.

The Immunization clinics in Kenai on April 2 and in Soldotna on April 3 will be canceled.

Dinner, auction fundraiser planned

A spaghetti dinner with all the trimmings and auction fundraiser to benefit Marcus Yamada will be held 6 p.m. April 5 at the Kenai Armory. Yamada is in the Seattle Children's Hospital undergoing treatment for promyeloytic leukemia.

A tax deductible account has been set up at Wells Fargo Bank through Bridges Community Resource Network, Inc.

Donations are being accepted for auction items, by calling Jenny McGrady at 394-3452, Kenny Yamada at 335-4180 or Bill Neiderhauser at 283-3495.

Community members wanting to send a message to Yamada, sign a guest book or get updates on his condition may visit www.caringbridge.com, using marcusyamada for the site name.

Sexual assault awareness workshop available

The LeeShore Center will hold a domestic violence and sexual assault community awareness workshop from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 7 through 11. The topics will be domestic violence, sexual assault, effects of domestic violence on children, the center's batterer's intervention program and volunteering with shelter clients.

It is open to the public. Participants may attend all or a portion of the workshop. Continuing education credits may be earned after completion of the workshop and 30 hours of volunteer work with the center.

Soccer registration begins

The Boys and Girls Club outdoor soccer registration runs through April 25. Outdoor soccer is for youth ages 4 to high school. Participants must be a current Boys and Girls Club member plus $60 for seventh grade and up and $50 for sixth grade and under. Registration is available in person at 227 Caviar St. Kenai or by fax to 283-4675.

Library seek volunteers

The Friends of the Kenai Community Library are looking for persons interested in helping with fundraising efforts for the approved library expansion.

Training will be provided prior to any activity.

Social Security information available

The Social Security Administration representatives are available by video conferences only at the Kenai Senior Citizens Center at the following times.

* April from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 2 and 16;

* May from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 7 and 21;

* June from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 4 and 18.

The LeeShore Center's community directory of central Kenai Peninsula resources is available for $25 with a three-ring binder or $15 for refill pages only. The directory lists more than 80 pages of information on emergency services, family support agencies, health facilities, senior citizens services and veteran's organizations.
