FAIRBANKS (AP) -- A 22-year-old Fairbanks man whose meeting in an Internet chat room led to sexual relationship with a minor was sentenced to two years in prison Friday.
Internet service worker Robert ''Shawn'' Christian was convicted Dec. 1 of second degree sexual abuse of a minor for sex with a 15-year-old girl he met through an Internet chat room.
Christian was acquitted of having sex with another 15-year-old girl when he was 19 years old between November 1997 and 1998.
Assistant District Attorney Scott Mattern asked for a sentence of four years, with two suspended. Superior Court Judge Mary Greene agreed and added five years probation, sex offender treatment, a ban on computer use and a ban on unsupervised contact with girls under 18.
Defense attorney Mike Kramer asked for leniency because Christian has no prior record and is a productive member of society.
He had asked that Christian serve 90 days with some ''substantial community service'' and possibly serve some time during the weekends to ensure he kept his job as a systems administrator at MosquitoNet.
''Most sexual offenders have pretty good jobs, no crime records,'' Greene said. ''He seems to be a pretty typical offender.''
Christian is appealing the case.
