Ninilchik girls earn trip to defend state title

The Ninilchik Wolverines girls basketball team showed why they are the defending state champs as they pounded out a win over rival Seldovia Friday in a 43-31 decision to advance to the Region II District 3/2A championship game.

The Wolverines and Sea Otters were neck-and-neck at the end of the first half, with Ninilchik holding onto a 23-19 lead. The second half proved to be the undoing for the Otters as the Wolverines clawed their way to victory, outscoring Seldovia 20-12.

Ninilchik followed the scoring of Whitney Leman, who poured in two 3-point field goals, two field goals and a perfect 2-of-2 from the free-throw line to lead the Wolverines as the only Ninilchik player to score in double digits.

Seldovia only had five players put points on the board, none in double digits.

The CIA Eagles girls basketball team edged the CCS Knights out of the running Friday as they climbed from a early one-point deficit to win.

The Eagles followed the scoring of Chantel Reese, who poured in 15, while Brittany Leiter added 11 to advance the CIA squad to one game away from a showdown with Ninilchik.

The Knights followed the scoring efforts of Rose Sinnhuber and Sherah Packa, who had 12 points each in the loss.

Community Christian School girls 64, Wings Christian Academy 29

The CCS Knights girls basketball team pounded out a win over the struggling Wings Eagles Friday.

The Knights lanced their way past the Eagles, jumping to a 43-17 lead by the end of the third quarter. The Knights never looked back as they drubbed the Eagles out of the tournament.

The Knights followed the scoring abilities Deanna Baugh, who poured in 29 points, while Shelby Seymour added 10 in the victory.

The Eagles only had four players out of their five players manage to put points on the board with Melinda Kincaid leading the way with 12 in the loss.

The CIA Eagles girls basketball team crushed the Bristol Bay Angels Friday. The Eagles drubbed the Angels straight out of the tournament and onto the next bus home from Homer as they cruised to a 39-9 first-half lead and didn't bother to look down as they walked to the win.

The Eagles followed the scoring efforts of Sarah McLeod with 18 points, while Kristen Zimmerman added 14 and Mandy Evans and Chantel Reese added 13 each to crush the Bristol Bay squad.

The Angels didn't have a prayer as they stumbled before the Eagles. No Bristol Bay player was allowed to score into double digits.

Seldovia boys 53, Community Christian School 41

The Sea Otters of Seldovia ended the CCS Knights boys basketball team's hunt for the Region II District 3/2A title Friday with a 12-point victory, keeping the Otters' hope for a state-title run alive.

The Sea Otters followed the scoring leads of Jeremiah Dillon, who hit seven from the floor for 14 points, and Tom Bowden, who added 13.

CCS's Joshua Veldstra had 19 points to lead the Knights in the loss.

The Otters moved on to meet Cook Inlet Academy for a chance to face off against Bristol Bay in the championship game.

The CIA Eagles boys basketball team could not keep up with the Bristol Bay Angels as they slid into the loser's bracket Friday. The Angels took an early 23-17 first-quarter lead and held on for the win.

The Angels followed the scoring abilities of Chad Anderson, who poured in seven 3-pointers and two field goals along with going 3-of-4 from the free-throw line to gather 28 points. Teammates Chris Young added 11 points while Tim Matson, who had 10 points, rounded out the double-digit scoring.

The Eagles followed the reliable scoring of Chet Nettles, who hit eight 3-pointers and one from the floor along with a golden 2-of-2 from the free-throw line for 28 points, to keep them in the contest while Calder Hillyer added 13 and Justin Franchino had 11 in the losing effort.

The Seldovia Sea Otters boys basketball team sent the Nikolaevsk Warriors packing for home as they ousted the Warriors from the loser's bracket Friday.

The Otters took an early lead and used it to snub out the Warriors while keeping their own state-title hunting alive and well.

The Sea Otters followed the scoring leadership of Nick Oliveira, who had 18 points, while teammate Tom Bowden added 17.

The Warriors followed Fedosa Efimov with 18 points while Peter Tipikin added 15 in the losing effort.

The Community Christian School boys basketball team knocked the Ninilchik Wolverines out of contention for the Region II District 3/2A title Friday as the Knights slipped away with the win.

The Knights followed the scoring lead of Joshua Veldstra, who poured in 15 field goals and went 5-for-8 from the free-throw line to dominate the scoring with 35 points. Teammate Shiloh Seymour scored 11 for CCS.

The Wolverines used the scoring abilities of Steven Miller and Buck Kvasnikoff to stay in the game. Miller hit two 3-point shots and five from the floor for 17 while Kvasnikoff added 14 in the losing effort.
