The Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly, in keeping with it's tradition of honoring students that excel in academic as well as athletic challenges, unanimously passed a resolution commending the Kenai Central High School Hockey team for capturing the 2003 Region III/4A North Star Conference Championship title.
"This team has proven to their families, classmates, teammates, and most importantly themselves, just how important hard work and teamwork can be," said Assembly President Pete Sprague in presenting copies of the resolution to the members of the Kardinal Hockey Team at last week's assembly meeting. On day one of the tournament, the Kards advanced to play against the Soldotna Stars, and on day two, they skated past the Stars to capture the championship.
In another commending resolution, the assembly honored Hannah Bradley, a seventh grader from Homer Middle School for winning the 2003 Anchorage Daily News Alaska State Spelling Bee. Bradley out-spelled 172 other student competitors from across Alaska to prevail in the winning round by correctly spelling the word "nasopharynx," the part of the pharynx behind and above the soft palate, according to Webster's. Some of the words had Japanese and Greek origins and French derivatives of Latin words. Miss Bradley will represent Alaska in the Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee this May in Washington D.C.
