Mickey F. Mathis
Former Soldotna resident Mickey F. Mathis died Saturday, March 19, 2005, at Alaska Regional Hospital in Anchorage. She was 83.
A service will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, March 28, at Valley Funeral Home, 151 E. Herning Ave. in Wasilla, with Pastor Steven Reem officiating. Pictures and stories can be shared by friends and family.
Ms. Mathis was born June 19, 1921, in Azle, Tarrant County, Texas, to Una Lee Dickson (Baker) and Willie Jones.
Prior to living in Wasilla, she lived and worked from Nome to Soldotna as a cook and a baker. She also worked in the remote lodge at Lake Clark while the runway was being built.
She enjoyed spending time with her cockatiels, goldfish and frogs.
"Mickey was an independent woman all her life with a personality full of flare and a style all her own. She enjoyed movies and had an excellent memory for details, names and faces. Mickey will now be reunited with her dog Candy," her family said.
Ms. Mathis is survived by her sister, Mary Lou Cook of Graham, Texas; niece, Cheryl Dooley of Graham; cousin, Irene Gregg of Odessa, Texas; and many friends.
As a long-term Alaskan, Mickey has a brick at the Alaska Path of Freedom in Wasilla, which can serve as a place to go in remembrance.
Arrangements were made by Valley Funeral Home and Crematory.
