East girls storm back to win state title

East stifled the Colony Knights in the second half Saturday to pull away with the state championship 50-46 at the Sullivan Arena in Anchorage. The Knights shot only 40 percent from the floor in the match and were outscored 15-2 in the third quarter.

The Thunderbirds took their first state championship since 1989. The Knights were denied their third title in four years.

The boys championship game was in progress as the Clarion went to press.

Kodiak boys 72, Juneau 60

In a battle of bears, Kodiak bested the Juneau Crimson Bears and took third place in the process.

Chugiak boys 77, Lathrop 66

The Chugiak Mustangs sealed their fourth-place finish Saturday by winning against Lathrop.

Malemute Ryan Broker led the game with 18 points and went 10-for-15 from the foul line.

Palmer girls 62, Wasilla 54

In an all Region III/4A battle for third place, Palmer received 16 points from Tami Callison to remove some of the hurt of parting with its state crown.

Ketchikan girls 57, Chugiak 44

The Lady Kings took fourth place against the Mustangs Saturday.
