Seldovia boys, Ninilchik girls wrap up Class 2A state berths early

Both the Seldovia boys and Ninilchik girls basketball teams clinched return trips to the state tournament Friday at the District 3/2A tournament at Homer High School.

The Wolverines used a quick start to defeat Seldovia 45-35 and advance to Saturday's championship game.

Tasha Leman had seven points and Theresa Chihuly added six as Ninilchik outscored Seldovia 23-4 in the first period.

Chihuly ended up pacing all scorers with 18 points, while Leman finished with 10. Freshman Jaimie Geagel pumped in 17 points for the Sea Otters.

The Seldovia boys staked out their spot in Saturday's championship with a 64-41 victory over Bristol Bay.

Junior Jeff Swick led the charge with six 3-pointers and 28 points in the game, while Jeremiah Dillon pitched in 18 points for the Sea Otters.

Bristol Bay received 17 points from Chad Anderson and 11 from Chris Young.

Community Christian School girls 36, Unalaska 31

Stephanie Benner had 11 points and Kristina Arno added 10 as the Knights eliminated the Raiders from the tournament and kept them from a return trip to state. Amber Guitard paced Unalaska with 10 points.

By winning the quarterfinal game in the losers bracket, CCS earned the right to play Seldovia Saturday for a berth at state and in the district final.

Cook Inlet Academy boys 53, Community Christian School 37

The Eagles put four players in double figures in eliminating the Knights from the tournament.

Sophomore Stephen Staton poured in 14 points to pace CIA, while Justin Franchino had 12 and Calder Hillyer and Eric Minelga added 10 apiece. Karl Keim had 13 points and Joshua Veldstra added 12 for CCS.

By winning the quarterfinal game in the losers bracket, the Eagles earned the right to face Bristol Bay Saturday for a return trip to state and a berth in the district final.

Girls first round losers bracket

Community Christian School defeated Cook Inlet Academy 38-27 and Unalaska defeated Bristol Bay 47-42 as the Knights and Raiders advanced to a clash in a losers bracket quarterfinal game.

Kristina Arno poured in 19 points to key the victory by CCS, while sophomore Chantal Reese had 14 points as the Eagles came up short.

Unalaska put Cherie Rushing (15 points), Amber Guitard (12 points) and Brandy Maines (10 points) in double figures vs. the Angels, who received 15 points from Beth Durand and 11 from Alexis Maas.

Boys second round losers bracket

Cook Inlet Academy downed Ninilchik 51-26 and Community Christian School edged Unalaska 34-33 as the Knights and Eagles advanced to a showdown in a losers bracket quarterfinal game.

CIA's front court of Noah Shields and Eric Minelga led the way against the Wolverines with 12 points apiece.

Karl Keim notched 20 points for the Knights in their win over the Raiders, who received 10 points apiece from Aaron Mulligan and Adam Hasenhorl.
