Seward's Day closures

Posted: Monday, March 26, 2001

Today is Seward's Day, commemorating the treaty the Russians and Americans signed March 30, 1867, to sell Alaska to the United States.

The state holiday is named after William Henry Seward, secretary of state under President Andrew Johnson, who negotiated the treaty. By state statute, it is held on the last Monday in March.
