Longtime Soldotna resident Roland Walter Schwanke died Wednesday, March 22, 2006 at Providence Medical Center in Anchorage. He was 75.

Funeral services will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, March 27 at Soldotna Bible Chapel, 300 W. Marydale in Soldotna. Visitation will be held one hour prior. Pastor John Rysdyk will officiate. A reception will immediately follow the service at the church. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 28 at the Kenai City Cemetery. Pallbearers will include Bill Hanson, Josh Hanson, Bo Abbott, Tobias Abbott, Tom Cooper and Tim Herrick. Honorary pallbearers will be Rick Abbott and Bob Scott.

Mr. Schwanke was born March 22, 1931 in Watertown, S.D., where he was raised and graduated from Watertown High School. He entered the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean War until he was honorably discharged. Mr. Schwanke moved to Alaska in October 1968 where he has resided and worked in fish processing for more than 35 years.

He was a member of the Soldotna Bible Chapel.

“Ronald was loved by so many people because of his gentle, kind and caring ways. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather and friend and will be so dearly missed by all of us. Through all of the hardships in life, Roland was one to always stay optimistic and forge ahead to a new adventure. His main love in life was the fish processing business. Like the Lord’s disciples, being called away from their nets, Roland has taken to a much higher calling,” his family wrote.

Mr. Schwanke was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Edna Schwanke.

He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Donna Schwanke of Soldotna; daughters, Lisa Hanson of Soldotna and Shellie Tressler of Pagosa Springs, Colo.; grandchildren, Bill, Josh and Michelle Hanson, all of Soldotna, Vince Tressler of Steamboat Springs, Colo., Chris Tressler of Pagosa Springs, Bo Abbott of Anchorage, Sarah Seagraves of Dillingham and Tobias Abbott of Soldotna; brothers and sisters in-law, Marvin and Janice Schwanke of Watertown, S.D., and Jerry and Donna Schwanke of Vancouver, Wash.; brother in-law, Jim Friessen of Sioux Falls, S.D.; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Newman and Dolores Gibbs of San Marcos, Texas and Warren and Hilda Friessen of Sioux Falls, S.D.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Roland Schwanke Memorial Fund, C/O Key Bank, 44260 Sterling Highway Soldotna, AK 99669.

Arrangements were made by Peninsula Memorial Chapel in Kenai.
