Volunteers put event's success over the top

The Kenai Peninsula Borough School District Elementary Forensics Committee would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the coaches, parents and volunteers, who made the 2008-09 Elementary Borough Forensics Tournament a success.

More than 140 students in grades four through six traveled from around the borough to Sterling Elementary to represent their schools and compete in one of nine different categories. The event requires a significant number of volunteers, and the community rose to the occasion by providing many people who helped in a variety of capacities, including judging, timing, hall monitoring, tabulation, ribbon sorting, announcing, not to mention setting up and cleaning up.

The assistance of Marc Berezin, who coordinated all the entries, score sheets, tabulation and results, was truly invaluable, and his behind-the-scenes effort is what really made the meet run smoothly.

The committee also would like to extend a sincere thanks to Joe DeSmidt Jr. at Sterling Tool Rental for his gracious response to the desperate need for additional parking during the competition. This annual event provides elementary-aged students the opportunity to develop skills for a successful future by encouraging public speaking and performance skills, and the event was a huge success thanks to the involvement of many volunteers.
