T-shirt design contest continues

A contest to design the official 2009 Kenai River Festival T-shirt for the Kenai Watershed Forum is under way. The deadline is 5 p.m. April 3.

Designs must be original art by the artist submitting the design. Designs may be submitted via e-mail, in person or via mail on cd/dvd or on paper and must embrace the spirit of the Kenai River Festival.

A winner will be announced by April 17. The winner will receive $100 and two free T-shirts.

Designs submitted electronically must meet the following specifications: Resolution, 300dpi; file size, not to exceed 2 MB; max image size, 14 inches by 16 inches; and file types accepted, .TIF, .JPG or .PDF

Designs submitted on paper must not exceed 14 inches by 16 inches.

Youth art classes offered

The Kenai Fine Arts Center offers disciplined based art education classes for youth in grades kindergarten through sixth. Classes will be held at the center and at Bridges in Soldotna.

Some of the topics covered in the program are art production, history, criticism and aesthetics, elements of art and principles of art. Also understanding art, creating art, appreciating art and art vocabulary.

Group lessons are taught once a week for eight weeks and are 1 1/2 hours long. Multiple classes are scheduled for different grade and age levels. The cost will be $35 per lesson, plus a one-time $10 per eight week session materials fee. Materials fee to be added to cost.

Senior center seeks art

The Soldotna Senior Citizens Center is seeking artists to display artwork at the center for a month at a time, beginning in 2010. Artists will be responsible for putting art up and taking it down. For more information, call 262-2322.

Kids' reading program continues

Triumvirate Bookstore in the Peninsula Center Mall in Soldotna is hosting a Frequent Reading Program.

Kids may sign up at the bookstore, pick out one free book, a reading calendar and program rules.

Kids are encouraged to read a book, bring their calendar to the bookstore, get it punched and pick up another free book.

Bookstore hours are noon to 6 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays.
