313 anglers turn out for king derby

The one-day Homer Winter King Salmon Tournament, held Sunday, found Homer resident John Bolbos walking away with $7,199 for his tournament-record winning catch of a 40.89-pound feeder king salmon.

The tournament, which had originally been planned for Saturday but was postponed due to weather, found 313 anglers paying the $100 entry fee to fish, making the cash giveaways for the Top 10 fish total $25,040.

A total of 128 fish were landed between the 98 participating boats during the eight-hour tournament.

Top 10 anglers: 1. John Bolbos, Homer, 40.89-pound catch, $7,199 in prize money; 2. Bo Calhoun, Homer, 37.43, $4,695; 3. Charles Wood, Soldotna, 34.99, $3,756; 4. Floyd Newkirk, Homer, 32.03, $2,817; 5. Jerry Brandon, Riverside, Calif., 31.84, $1,878; 6. Floyd Newkirk, Homer, 31.4, $1,565; 7. Gary Lyon, Homer, 31.275, $1,252; 8. Harold Belk, Eagle River, 30.89, $939; 9. Clive Talking-ton, Anchor Point, 30.72, $626; 10. Phil Christensen, Homer, 30.515, $313.
