ANCHORAGE (AP) -- A Kotzebue man has died following a snowmachine crash on the Selawik River, Alaska State Troopers said.

Benjamin Stallsworth, 21, died of a head injury Tuesday morning. Troopers said he was pronounced dead at the Selawik clinic while waiting for a medical evacuation.

Stallsworth and his passenger, 21-year-old Gary Jackson of Selawik, were speeding on the river when they hit an unknown object. The object then struck Stallsworth in the head, knocking him unconscious.

Stallsworth was treated at the clinic, where he stopped breathing at one point, troopers said. A doctor arrived from Kotzebue, 70 miles away, and treated Stallsworth, but was unable to save him.
