Ninilchik girls sink Unalaska

Posted: Thursday, March 28, 2002

The Ninilchik girls basketball team came out and played about like one would expect the defending state champion and nine-time defending district champion to play in the opening round of the District 3/2A tournament Wednesday at Cook Inlet Academy.

Hitting on all cylinders, the No. 1-seeded Wolverines grabbed a 14-0 lead en route to handing Unalaska, the No. 8 seed, a 72-15 loss.

Ninilchik moves on to play Bristol Bay in a semifinal game today at 4:30 p.m. Unalaska falls into the second-place bracket for a 1:30 p.m. game today against Lumen Christi.

The Wolverines hit their first six shots Wednesday on their way to taking the 14-0 lead.

Whitney Leman, who would end up with 17 points, had seven points during that stretch, while Molly Bosick, who would end up with a game-high 24 points, had four points in that stretch.

Ninilchik also came out in a press that was forcing so many turnovers Unalaska had to call two timeouts before the game was a minute old.

"I liked our start," said Ninilchik coach Dan Leman, whose team is ranked No. 1 in Class 2A in the prep poll. "We really came out fighting.

"It's nice when you have to back off the defense instead of telling them to pick the defense up."

Due to spring break, the Wolverines hadn't played a game before Wednesday in over a week.

However, the team showed commitment when Leman held practices over the break and all the players showed up.

"I think they were a little hungry after that break," Leman said. "They were looking forward to this."

Janelle Moerlein joined Whitney Leman and Bosick in double figures with 10 points.

Mariah Robinson paced Unalaska with six points.
