Telephone scam making the rounds

Posted: Thursday, March 29, 2001

The promise of sweepstakes-winning awards over the telephone is too good to be true, according to Attorney General Bruce Botelho.

Telemarketing scams have been reported by Alaska residents who say the calls are from individuals advising them that they have won a $250,000 prize and to avoid IRS taxes they must make a $2,500 payment to a Western Union account in Quebec, Canada. The Attorney General's office issued a warning to the public that these calls are fraudulent and no such sweepstakes money has been awarded to the people called.

Anyone receiving such a call is asked to report the incident to Kevin Blackmore, Customs Service, U.S. Treasury, (907) 271-2880. Calls should also be reported to the Alaska Depart-ment of Law's Consumer Protec-tion Unit, (907) 269-5100.
