KODIAK (AP) -- A human skull was found Wednesday at Cape Alitak on Kodiak Island.

The skull, which has three teeth, was found by Akhiok resident Philip Rastopsoff while he was beachcombing on his four-wheeler.

Rastopsoff said the skull was lying on top of the sand with the incoming tide nearly reaching it. He placed it in a bucket, covered it with his jacket and took it to Robert Simeonoff, Akhiok village public safety officer.

Simeonoff said he started a preliminary investigation and would have no information until it was complete. Alaska State Troopers said the skull will be sent to the state crime lab to determine whether it is ancient or a missing person.
