A brash Hydaburg squad came from behind to defeat the Cook Inlet Academy boys high school basketball team 59-56 to unseat the defending state champion Eagles in the title game of the Alaska School Activities Association State 2A Championships Saturday.

Cook Inlet Academy led 24-20 at the half, but the Warriors were able to tie the game at 30 midway through the third quarter.

Hydaburg took its first lead, 34-32, since scoring the first point of the game with 1:55 left in the third quarter.

CIA's Kyle Nettles answered with a 3-pointer, and after Hydaburg's George Petratrovich hit for two points, Cook Inlet's Luke Myers drilled a pair of treys, including one to beat the buzzer, to give the Eagles a 41-36 lead entering the fourth quarter.

The Eagles were able to stay just ahead of the Warriors through most of the final frame, getting a clutch 3-pointer from Nettles and a nice bucket for two points from Jacob Peterson to build a 52-48 lead with 4:22 left to play.

Hydaburg was able to stay close, though, and a 3-pointer by Petratrovich pulled the Warriors to within two points, 56-54, with three minutes to play.

The Eagles were able to get the ball back, and took the clock down under one minute with a stall offense, but lost a handle on the ball.

Hydaburg came back with another trey by Petratrovich to take a 57-56 lead, then drew a charge to end CIA's ensuing possession with 17 seconds left to play.

The Eagles were forced to foul to stop the clock, and Vinny Edenshaw hit both of his double-bonus free throws to make it 59-56.

The Eagles desperately attempted two shots at the tie, but never got a good look at the basket.

Peterson finished with 17 points for the Eagles, while Myers scored 15 and Nettles poured in 14. Hillyer finished with eight points.

Petratrovich led all scorers with 23 points while Darren Edenshaw scored 18 and Vinny Edenshaw netted 10 points for the Warriors. Petratrovich also finished with 11 rebounds.
