Kodiak fisherman drowns near Sitka

KODIAK (AP) A Kodiak fisherman drowned near Sitka.

Scott Maechtle, 46, was last seen leaving the Sitka harbor alone in his skiff at 11:30 p.m. Friday, Sitka police said. He was returning to the 115-foot fishing vessel Alicia Jean moored offshore.

The Kodiak-based Alicia Jean was in Sitka for herring fishing.

Maechtle's body was found Saturday afternoon on the rocks of the breakwater in the Sitka Sound.

The skiff was found adrift. Sitka police said Maechtle appeared to have drowned.
