VFW poetry contest winners announced

First- through eighth-grade students from eight area schools, plus three home-schooled students participated in this year's American Flag Poetry Program sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary, Jerry V. Horn Memorial, Post No. 10046 in Soldotna. The winners are:

First place: First-grader Courtney Barker of Sterling Elementary; second-grader William Michaud of Aurora Borealis Charter; third-graders, Jalen Terry, home school, Ariel Pina of Kalifornsky Beach Elementary, Kara Martin of Kalifonsky Christian, Madison Cunningham of Mountain View Elementary, and Daniel Boone and Morgan Lancaster of Redoubt Elementary; fourth-graders, Riley Bunn, home school, and Coltyn Pribbenow of Kalifonsky Christian; fifth- and sixth-graders, Kara Stables, home school, Megan Gordon of Aurora Borealis Charter, Kaeleen Martin of Kalifonsky Christian, and Aubrey Rizzo of Mountain View Elementary; and seventh- and eighth-graders, Jaron Pribbenow of Kalifonsky Christian, Haley Niederhauser of Kenai Middle and Sarah Ralston of Nikiski Middle-Senior High.

Second place: First-grader Shira Waldrip of Sterling Elementary; second-grader Jordan Jackman of Aurora Borealis; third-graders, Heidi Westerman of Kalifornsky Beach Elementary, Shaylee Rizzo of Mountain View Elementary, and Tyler Dobson and Alex Torres of Redoubt Elementary; fifth- and sixth-graders, Michael Flores of Aurora Borealis Charter, and David Peterson of Kalifonsky Christian; and seventh- and eighth-graders, Quintun Pribbenow of Kalifonksy Christian, Heather Grisham of Kenai Middle and Kristen Heazlett of Nikiski Middle-Senior High.

Third place: First-grader Coltin Yancey of Sterling Elementary; second-grader Elan Drull of Aurora Borealis Charter; third-graders, Taylor Kishbaugh of Kalifornsky Beach Elementary, Sage Klauder of Mountain View Elementary and Derian Dreyer and Mony Steffy of Redoubt Elementary; fifth-sixth-grader Abigail Chadwick of Aurora Borealis Charter; and seventh- and eighth-graders, Brandon Goggia of Kenai Middle and Tristan Delaney of Nikiski Middle-Senior High.
