Local club joins the circus

Some people might call trying to occupy 90 to 150 kids a circus, and this week they would be right, as today the "Join Our Circus" event kicks off at the Soldotna Boys and Girls Club.

"We always do something special to celebrate Boys and Girls Club Week," said Kim Lee, clubhouse director, in regard to the event which this year runs today through Friday.

Boys and Girls Club of America set this week aside for local clubs to bring community attention to their programs and services.

"Our goal is to give kids a safe, fun place to go after school, where they can do homework, enjoy recreational activities and have snacks while waiting for their parents to get off of work," Lee said in regard to the club's overall objective.

This week, though, they will host special activities as part of their annual celebration. Each day the club will have circus-themed activities at 5 p.m. in their gym.

"We'll also be trying to raise a little money that will go back to supporting club activities, so we'll be selling cotton candy and having Mr. Joe Boon, our resident clown, taking pies in the face," Lee said.

For $1 a chance, club members, staff and visitors will be able to enter the drawing to throw a pie. One lucky pie thrower's name will be drawn each day, and there will be several names drawn Friday.

"We want to give quite a few people the opportunity to do it," Lee said.

She said there will be several other events and skits, by staff and children, throughout the week. Today features a juggling act and be crazy hair day. Tuesday there will be a magic show and it'll be pajama day. Wednesday balloon animals will be made, cotton candy sold and it'll be crazy hat day. Thursday will be face painting and twin day. Friday will be bring a friend to the club day. There will be several circus acts, and kids are encouraged to come dressed as their favorite circus animal or performer day.
