Wolverines stop Northway

The Ninilchik and Point Hope girls basketball teams picked up semifinal victories Friday night at Service High School in Anchorage to advance to the Class 2A state championship game.

Ninilchik topped Northway 52-38 (see related story, Page B-1), while Point Hope downed Kake 61-43.

The Harpoonerettes were led by Hilda Frankson with 21 points and Aggie Nashookpuk with 19 points. Danielle Knudsen and Robin Knudsen each had 15 for Kake.

In the fourth-place bracket games Friday, Matanuska Christian defeated Seldovia 40-29 and Unalakleet defeated Angoon 63-55.

The Sea Otters, already without starter Jaime Geagel, ran into foul trouble against the Eagles and eventually ran out of steam.

Seldovia led 25-22 heading into the fourth quarter, but was outscored 18-4 over the course of the final eight minutes. Starters Amy Gruber, Michelle Gruber, Amelia Dillon and Jacquelyn Brown all fouled out of the game.

Dillon paced the Sea Otters with 12 points, while Brown followed with 11 points.

Loryn Wilks hit for 21 points for the Eagles, while Rebecca Lindquist pitched in with 10.

In the other fourth-place bracket game, the Wolfpack put four players in double figures to top the Eagles.

Sonya Ivanoff and Timayre Towarak each had 14 for Unalakleet, while Jackie Ivanoff and Myrtle Ivanoff had 11.

Angoon's Amber Jamestown took game-high scoring honors with 23 points.

Class 2A boys

Bristol Bay and Point Hope advanced to the championship game with semifinal victories Friday.

Bristol Bay defeated Kake 69-38 behind 22 points from Damian Hill and 17 points from Chad Anderson. Kake got 15 points from Anthony Dolan and 14 points from Kyle Anderson in defeat.

Point Hope notched a 63-52 victory over Angoon, getting 20 points from Othneil OOmittuk and 14 points from Henry Nashookpuk. Angoon received 17 points from Oselle Jamestown, 13 points from Clayton Edwin and 10 points from Mike Pitka.

In the fourth-place bracket, Tanana defeated Tok 49-40 and Cook Inlet Academy topped Matanuska Christian 63-41 (see related story Page B-1).

Tanana was led by 17 points from Craig Albert and 16 points from Arnold Marks. Tok got 23 points from Chevie Roach and 12 points from Vince Renzetti.

Class 1A boys

Sand Point and Noorvik picked up victories to advance to Saturday's championship game. Sand Point defeated Aniak 61-51 while Noorvik defeated Shishmaref 50-47.

In the fourth-place bracket, Fort Yukon defeated Chevak 69-67 while Wainwright defeated Kasigluk 89-59.

Class 1A girls

Aniak and Noorvik collected victories Friday to move on to a title tilt. Aniak defeated Togiak 73-35 while Noorvik topped White Mountain 60-48.

In the fourth-place bracket, Chevak defeated Cornerstone Christian 49-28 while Wainwright topped Mekoryuk 61-47.
