Seldovia, Ninilchik girls advance to final

Posted: Sunday, April 02, 2000

The Seldovia and Ninilchik girls advanced to the championship game of the Class 2A state basketball tournament Friday with semifinal victories at Service High School in Anchorage.

Seldovia, ranked fifth in the state's media poll, defeated Unalakleet 52-40, while top-ranked Ninilchik crushed Minto 75-41.

In other Friday action at the state tournament involving a peninsula team, the Seldovia boys were eliminated after a 58-54 consolation semifinal loss to Minto.

The Wolverines advanced to their fifth state final in the past seven years by getting another huge game from freshman Whitney Leman.

Leman, who had 28 points in a 37-point thrashing of Kake Thursday, poured in another 24 on Minto. The freshman hit five 3-pointers in the game.

Ninilchik was never seriously challenged Friday as they jumped out to a 21-6 advantage after the first quarter. Sophomore Molly Bosick added 17 points for the Wolverines, while senior Theresa Chihuly chipped in with 16.

The victory put Ninilchik (25-2 overall) in the final against the Sea Otters (21-6), who lost to the Wolverines in all five previous meetings during the season.

Just as Ninilchik got a big game from a freshman, Seldovia also showed it will be a load in years to come. Freshman Jaime Geagel torched the Wolfpack for 21 points, and junior Jacquelyn Brown added 18, as the Sea Otters girls advanced to their first championship game.

The Sea Otters boys, who came into the tournament with the top ranking, lost two straight games at the state tournament for the second year in a row.

For Seldovia (23-5 overall), junior Jeremiah Dillon notched 19 points and senior Matt Brown chipped in 14.

In other boys 2A action Friday, Angoon and Kake advanced to Saturday's championship with semifinal wins. Angoon defeated Tri-Valley 53-44, while Kake strolled past Tanana 48-35. In the other boys consolation semifinal, Bristol Bay topped Nulato 57-46.

In the 2A girls consolation semifinals, Yakutat set down Tri-Valley 50-32 and Kake deflated Point Hope 48-43.

Friday's hoops action in the 1A girls tourney saw Wainwright defeat Chefornak 57-55, Noorvik top Nenana 53-34, King Cove tip Aniak 69-58 and Chevak climb all over White Mountain 74-41. Wainwright and Noorvik advance to the championship, while King Cove and Chevak move to the consolation final.

At the 1A boys tourney, Sand Point defeated Akiachak 83-69, Noorvik beat Shaktoolik 61-47, Wainwright stopped Atmautlauk 83-74 and Fort Yukon took Kotlik 69-65. Sand Point and Noorvik move to the championship, while Wainwright and Fort Yukon meet in the consolation final.
