Church basketball under way

The annual Peninsula Church Basketball Tournament runs through Saturday at the Kenai Recreation Center and at Kenai Central High School.

Teams include Soldotna Bible Chapel No. 1 and No. 2, Abundant Life, Peninsula Christian Center, Ninilchik Assembly, Kenai Christian Church, Calvary Baptist and Kalifornsky Christian Center.

A complete schedule can be found on the Internet at html. The championship game is slated for 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the high school.

Church hosts state lectureship

The Soldotna Church of Christ will host the 2004 Alaska State Lectureship today and Saturday at Soldotna High School.

The theme, "Back to the Basics," is taken from Ephesians 4:1-6. The lectureship is meant to instill a stronger faith in the "One God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all."

Registration is at 5 p.m. today with speakers from 7 to 9 p.m. Speakers will begin at 9 a.m. and end at 9 p.m. Saturday, and Sunday speakers will begin at 10 a.m. and end at noon. Classes and activities are offered for all age groups. For more information, call Tony Cloud at 394-1411.

Gospel sing starts Easter services

Peninsula Christian Center will begin its Easter services on Good Friday with a Gospel sing at 6 p.m. April 9 at the Soldotna Senior Citizens Center.

Josh Groban's "You Raise Me Up" and "The Easter Song" in sign language will be featured on Easter at 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. Artist Dennis Johns' full-size mural of the tomb will illustrate "The Tomb from the Inside Out" sermon.

Passion week events listed

The Abundant Life Assembly of God Church in Sterling has scheduled several Passion week events, including special guest speaker, David Newberry.

Newberry, who ministered for many years in Africa, will speak Sunday at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m., and Monday, Thursday and April 9 and 10 at 7 p.m. Bob Reasner, pastor, will speak on Easter Sunday.

From Palm Sunday through Easter, a Stations of the Cross fine art exhibit will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. A Stations of the Cross performing arts service will be conducted Wednesday at 7 p.m. The church is at Mile 81.5 of the Sterling Highway.

'Good thief' to speak

Dismas, the "good thief," an eyewitness to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, will speak at Star of the North Lutheran Church, 216 N. Forest Drive in Kenai, at 7 p.m. on Good Friday. A discussion of the film, "The Passion of the Christ," will follow.

Christ's resurrection will be celebrated at 11 a.m. April 11, preceded by a breakfast at 9 a.m. and an Easter egg hunt at 10 a.m.

Resurrection story to be performed

"We Have Seen God's Glory," the story of the resurrection, will be performed at the Soldotna Church of God at 7 p.m. April 9 and 10 and at 4 p.m. April 11.

Admission to the community drama and song event is free.

'Sonrise' service slated

The Apostolic Assembly of Jesus Christ will break its annual three-day purification fast with communion at the 7 a.m. "Sonrise" service April 11.

The Sunday school department plans a morning of special activities for children including a play, "Think About His Love," an annual money hunt, treats and other festivities for all. Call 260-5916 or 262-9693 for more information about Sunday school.

Women's Aglow plans events

Women's Aglow has announced a Point to Hope Ministries "Holy Spirit Encounter" retreat scheduled for April 16 and 17 at Solid Rock Bible Camp just outside Soldotna.

Anniversary celebration planned

The United Methodist Church of the New Covenant invites all to a 50th anniversary worship celebration at 11 a.m. April 18. The church is at 607 Frontage Road in Kenai.

A catered luncheon also is being planned for 1 p.m. that day at the Kenai Senior Citizens Center. The cost is $15 per person.

Sterling Bible class begins

Lee E. Scaggs, a retired pastor living in Sterling, is teaching a Bible class on the Book of Romans at 1 p.m. Fridays at the Sterling Senior Center.

The emphasis is on love and the grace of God. The sessions are open to answering sincere questions.

Clothes2Go open Wednesdays, Fridays

The Inlet Faith formerly Aurora Heights Assembly of God Clothes2Go is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesdays and from 2 to 6 p.m. Fridays to meet people's clothing needs.
