JUNEAU (AP) -- Anchorage International Airport would be renamed to honor U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens under a bill approved Monday by the Senate.

The measure renaming the state-owned airport Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport was introduced by the Senate Rules Committee.

Stevens, a veteran Republican, recently was named Alaskan of the Century. Originally appointed by then Gov. Walter Hickel after the death of Sen. E.L. Bob Bartlett in 1968, Stevens has been re-elected six times.

As chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, Stevens has directed millions of dollars in federal money to Alaska.

The measure passed the Senate 14-1 and now moves to the House.
