Man accused of abusing 3 children pleads not guilty

A 66-year-old Anchor Point man pleaded not guilty in Kenai Superior Court on Tuesday to 11 counts of sexual abuse of minors.

Judge Harold M. Brown scheduled a jury trial to begin the week of June 23 in Homer for Gerald L. Symens who is accused of sexually abusing children ages 9, 8 and 5 at the time of the alleged offenses and attempted sexual abuse of one 9-year-old.

On March 21, a grand jury indicted Symens on two counts of first-degree sexual abuse of a minor and three counts of second-degree sexual abuse of a minor, allegedly committed against a 9-year-old during 2001 and 2002 in the Anchor Point-Homer area.

He also was indicted on three counts of attempted second-degree sexual abuse of a minor, allegedly committed against another 9-year-old between April and June 2002 in the Anchor Point-Homer area.

Symens was indicted on two counts of second-degree sexual abuse of a minor, allegedly committed against an 8-year-old child between Dec. 31, 2001, and Nov. 19, 2002, in the Anchor Point-Homer area; and one count of second-degree sexual abuse of a minor, allegedly committed against a 5-year-old child between May 1 and Aug. 31, 2001, in the Anchor Point-Homer area.

Symens is being held at the Wildwood Pretrial Facility in lieu of $75,000 bail.
