With Major League Baseball's 2003 season just under way, two former Oilers have started the season off with noteworthy performances.
Ken Harvey (Oilers 1998) was the opening day designated hitter for the Kansas City Royals. Harvey was 2-for-4 with two doubles in the Royals' opening day win.
Mickey Callaway (Oilers 1995) got the starting nod for the World Champion Anaheim Angels' second game of the season. The right-hander recorded the win, pitching six solid innings and allowing only four hits in the team's shutout win.
Soldotna's Chris Mabeus (Oilers 1998, 1999, 2000) has been assigned to the the Modesto A's, a high Class A team in the Oakland organization. Also at Modesto is former Oilers teammate Marcus Gwynn (Oilers 1998).
Paul John Zobeck, also from Soldotna, is returning for his third season with the Oilers. Zobeck is batting .362 with four home runs and 15 runs batted in at Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa. Zobeck has played first base in all 16 of the Rams' games to date.
The Oilers' first roster casualty for the 2003 season is Nick Ponomorenko, a first baseman and pitcher from the University of Hawaii. Ponomorenko will attend summer school and is not available for the season.
