Smith earns closer role at New Mexico State

Mike Smith, a 1999 graduate of Skyview High School, is finishing up his college baseball career as the closer for the NCAA Division I New Mexico State Aggies.

Smith, a senior, will graduate next month with a degree in business management. He carries a 3.5 grade point average.

This season, Smith boasts a 4-1 win-loss record with two saves and a 4.87 earned run average through 26 2-3 innings of work. The Aggies are 25-7 and compete in the Sun Belt Conference. The Aggies won the 2002 conference tournament and qualified for the NCAA tournament.

Smith is the son of Terry and Toni Smith of Sterling, who say he is anxious to return to Alaska after graduation.
