The Ninilchik High School girls basketball team, the two-time defending state 2A champion, began its run at another state crown by defeating Tri-Valley 68-24 in the opening round of the Alaska School Activities Association State Championships Thursday at Service High School in Anchorage.

With the win, Ninilchik advances to face Kake in today's 3:45 p.m. semifinal. The Thunderbirds upset the Point Hope Harpoonerettes -- Ninilchik's opponent in the state final last year -- 56-53.

Unalakleet advanced to today's other semifinal, defeating Tok 53-38, and will play the winner of Thursday's late Seldovia-Yakutat game.

Molly Bosick paced the Wolverines with 19 points while Whitney Leman chipped in with 15 points.

Ninilchik, still perfect at 26-0 this season, dropped eight 3-pointers on the Viking Warriors, including three from Brieanna Leman.

While the Ninilchik offense was hitting from everywhere on the floor, the Wolverines defense was stifling, holding the Viking Warriors to six points in the first half.
