Chambers set schedules

Youth cooking classes offered

Pint Size Workshop cooking classes will be held at 10 a.m. Saturdays at Allen and Petersen Cooking and Appliance Center in Kenai. Admission is two cans of food or a $2 donation to the Kenai Peninsula Food Bank. A parent must remain in the store during the 30 minute workshops.

Crimestoppers seeks support

The Central Peninsula Crimestoppers board is seeking community support for its annual poster drive. With sponsorship from local businesses, the group each year publishes posters featuring the phone number of the local Crimestoppers tip-line. The posters are displayed in businesses and public locations around the peninsula. Each poster also features replication of a business card representing each of 15 sponsors.

Businesses, groups, or individuals wishing to sponsor posters can do so for a donation of $50 or more. The $50 fee will get their name on 15 posters. A $100 donation would sponsor 30 posters. Donations beyond the cost of publishing the posters will be used for payment of rewards for information which helps to solve crimes on the peninsula.

Crimestoppers has been active on the peninsula for more than 20 years, and during that time has been instrumental in solving nearly 250 crimes ranging from murder and theft to narcotics. Thanks to Crimestoppers tips, more than $200,000 worth of stolen property has been recovered locally, and more than 1.6 million dollars in illegal drugs have been confiscated. Central Peninsula Crimestoppers has paid out more than $16,000 in rewards for information.

If you have information the police might need in order to solve a crime, you can call the Crimestoppers toll free tip-line at (800) 478- 4258 or locally at 283-8477. You may remain anonymous, and if the information helps to solve a crime you can receive a reward.

Wireless options to be discussed

Alaska Communications Systems Group, Inc. will host a free Wireless How-to Night from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at its ACS Soldotna store at 151 Warehouse Dr. The topics will be how to use wireless phone features such as text and picture messaging; downloading of ringtones and music; viewing mobile TV; and goVocalTM internet phone service.

Refreshments will be provided and drawings will take place every half hour to win a Motorola SLVR Phone or Bluetooth wireless accessory. It is open to the public.

Alaska’s outstanding older worker sought

Experience Works, a training and employment organization for mature workers, is searching for Alaska’s outstanding older worker. Experience Works Prime Time Awards program is part of Experience Works’ national effort to raise awareness of the contributions made by older individuals and to break down barriers associated with the hiring of all older workers.

Outstanding older workers from every state, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico will be honored in Washington, D.C., and in their home states for their contributions to the work force and local communities.

Nominees or applicants must be 65 years of age or older, a resident of Alaska, currently employed, and working at least 20 hours each week for pay. The honoree also must be willing and able to travel to Washington, D.C., in October for the Prime Time Award events. The visit will include meetings with congressional representatives, a tour of the city’s landmarks, and the awards banquet and ceremony. Family, friends or colleagues may send in a nomination, or older workers can self nominate.

Bones for Life seminar offered

A free Bones for Life seminar will be held April 29 and 30 at the Alaska Sprucewood Lodge. The program uses natural organic movement to try to stimulate and strengthen bones, improve posture and help users to move freely, efficiently and pain-free.

Workshop will be led by student teachers and overseen by Gail French, Feldenkrais practitioner, physical therapist and certified Bones for Life instructor. For more information, call Gail at (907) 344-6261.
