The 12-and-under Alaska Quakes baseball team, made up of athletes from Palmer, Anchorage and Sterling, traveled to Phoenix and Tucson, Ariz., to compete in the Triple Crown Spring Championships over spring break.
The team finished third in the tournament, beating teams from Utah, Canada, Colorado and two teams from Arizona. In the tournament, Sterling's Mitchel Daugherty cut short a rally by striking out two when the bases were loaded.
The team also had an opportunity to work with an Arizona college coach and see some Major League Baseball spring training games.
Through the winter, the team practices in Anchorage three times per week at The Dome. The next tournament for the team will be in Fairbanks in May.
