Puffins Red wins gold

The Peninsula Puffins Red hockey team went undefeated to claim the tournament championship at the Alaska State Women's Hockey Challenge last weekend at the Soldotna Sports Center.

Puffins Red won five games and tied one through last Friday and Saturday's round-robin play, and followed that with a 1-0 win over Alcan in a semifinal game Sunday morning.

Stephanie Haakenson scored the only goal of the game, assisted by goaltender Dan Fagan.

Puffins Red came from behind to defeat Remax of Anchorage 3-2 in Sunday's championship game.

Haakenson scored a pair of goals in the second period to tie the score at 2, with assists from Nancy Carver, Sandra Moeglin and Dawn Lesterson.

Peninsula scored the go-ahead goal 14 seconds into the third period when Heidi Hanson found Kathy Ehrhardt in front of the net.

Kelly Beille, Kirsten Ehrhardt and Carol Morris also play for the Puffins Red. Jack Carver serves as the bench boss, assisted by Kelsey Knudson.

Bantam D tourney this weekend at Sports Center

The Bantam D state hockey tournament takes place this weekend at the Soldotna Sports Center.

The field features teams from Nikiski, Homer, the Kenai Peninsula Hockey Association in Soldotna, the Boys and Girls Club from Anchorage and a team from the Matanuska-Susitna valleys.

Round-robin competition begins this morning and runs through Saturday, with the championship game pitting the two teams with the best two-day records against each other scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Sunday.
