CIA boys top Ninilchik for state crown

The Cook Inlet Academy boys basketball team was playing for the last shot. After two failed attempts, the Eagles finally got it.

CIA's Justin Franchino hit the front end of a one-and-one with 11 seconds to play in the second overtime of Saturday's Alaska School Activities Association State 2A Basketball Championship at Service High School, and Bryan Powers intercepted a Ninilchik pass as the Wolverines pushed the ball up the floor looking for the equalizer, securing a 43-40 win over Ninilchik and a state title for the Eagles.

The Eagles also won the state title in 1999.

With the score tied at 36, the Eagles played the final two minutes of regulation for the last shot of the game, but Ninilchik's Steven Miller came up with a steal with 25 seconds to play. Buck Kvasnikoff got off a shot as time expired, but the ball missed its mark and the Wolverines' attempt at a put-back was waved off.

Franchino scored CIA's only basket of the first overtime, and the Eagles attempted to run down the clock again.

Miller drew a charging call, though, and after the Eagles came up with a rebound on the Wolverines' ensuing possession, John Matson made a heads-up steal and fed the ball to Miller to tie the game at 38 and send it to a second overtime.

The Wolverines led 23-16 heading into the locker room after a gritty first half, but Franchino scored 12 of his 17 points in the second half, including a tip-in on a rebound of his own shot to tie the game at 30 after three quarters of play.

Kvasnikoff led the Wolverines with 17 points.
