When I was a little girl, my mom and younger sister Bobbi use to walk down our half-mile long driveway to pick me up from the bus stop. When the snow began to melt, Bobbi, who would have been 3 or 4 years old, told my mom; "The rocks are coming!"

Every year when the snow begins to melt and the gravel shows through, I take it as one of the first real signs of spring. Some places have daffodils, we have rocks, but either way it does mean spring is on the way.

Sterling Head Start fall enrollment for the 2008 school year has begun and will continue until May 9. As of this time, there are 39 slots open. They are on the Sterling Highway at Mile 81.5, next to Cook's Tesoro.

Sterling Head Start is a child development program that serves young children, 3 to 5 years old, and their families. They offer morning and afternoon classroom options. The Head Start school week consists of four 3 1/2-hour classroom days. You will need your child's immunization records and TB test results, as well as family income verification.

They will need a copy of your child's Denali Kid Care, Medicaid or family insurance card and parent and child's Social Security numbers to complete the application process. For more information, contact Melissa Daugherty or Janice Smith at 260-7446 or e-mail sterling@ruralcap.com.

There will be a fundraising dinner to benefit Larry Bragaw on April 19 at the Sterling Senior Center. Larry has a genetic condition that required a liver transplant and has no health insurance. Larry is at the University of Washington Hospital. The benefit will start with a spaghetti dinner from 5 to 7 p.m. The cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 3 to 12. An auction of donated items starts at 7 p.m. If you are interested in donating something for the auction, contact the Sterling Senior Center.

Kathy Overpeck e-mailed me to let me know the Sterling Abundant Life Church will host a guest speaker, Randy DeMain, for a series of services April 16-19. Randy has been ministering throughout the nation with Chuck Pierce, Bobby Conner, Paul Keith Davis and other prominent speakers. For more information, call 262-7266.

The senior center can help you with your spring cleaning. They will have a garage sale April 25 and 26. You can call Glenda at 262-2943 if you would like to rent a table.

Happy birthday wishes go out this week to Albert Fry on April 8, Ann Weiss and James Miller on April 10, Linda Estes on April 11 and Joan Bickish on April 13.

As always, if you have information you would like to see printed in this section of the paper, send me an e-mail or give me a call.
