Paul Kim

Longtime Alaska resident Paul Kim died Tuesday, March 29, 2005, at Heritage Place in Soldotna after a short illness. He was 87.

A celebration of Mr. Kim's life will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 9, at the Kenai United Methodist Church of the New Covenant. Pastors Phil Reemtsma and Jon Walters will officiate. A brief reception will follow.

Mr. Kim was born on Aug. 6, 1917, in Taegu, Korea, and came to Alaska upon retirement in 1984. In Korea, he attended Dagu University, and in 1959 he received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Ganyung College in Korea. He moved to the United States in 1960 with his family.

Mr. Kim attended seminary in Philadelphia, Israel and Chicago and earned a Master's of Divinity degree in 1981 and worked as a social worker. Incomplete doctoral studies followed at the University of Chicago.

Mr. Kim lived in Anchorage, Petersburg, Cordova and Kenai.

"He enjoyed sharing his life and his Christian perspective with all he met and was a generous spirit seemingly without limit. He embodied the Christian Spiritual gifts of hospitality, self-control, gentleness, holiness and selflessness," his family said.

"Paul Kim was an amazing person, so true to his word and God above. He gave away his belongings to every person in need and gave no thought to tomorrow — what he would eat, what he would drink."

Mr. Kim was an active evangelist associated with the Korean Presbyterian Church and carried his Bible with him at all times. He was always ready to share his testimony of his Christian experience.

He was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.

Mr. Kim is survived by three daughters, Jane and June of Chicago, and Jennie of San Francisco; several grandchildren; and many friends, including his special friend Joanna Hollier and her family.

Memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church of the New Covenant, 607 Frontage Road, Kenai, AK 99611.

Arrangements were made by Peninsula Memorial Chapel in Kenai.
