ANCHORAGE (AP) -- Mayor Rick Mystrom threw his support Friday behind fellow Republican George Wuerch who will face Democrat Mark Begich in a mayoral runoff election May 2.
''I've worked with both of them on the Assembly,'' Mystrom said in an interview with KTUU-TV. ''I think that George Wuerch would be best for Anchorage. I think George Wuerch reflects my philosophy.''
Mystrom said Begich, considered a moderate liberal, has the edge going into the runoff but the real issue is how the people who supported moderate Republican Jack Frost will vote. That group is likely to split their votes between Begich and Wuerch, he said.
Begich received about twice as many votes as Wuerch in Tuesday's election. Wuerch, a conservative, edged the more liberal Frost for second by about 1,300 votes. The runoff was required because no one got more than 50 percent of the vote.
