DEC says Cominco violating air quality

JUNEAU (AP) -- An inspection of Cominco's Red Dog Mine has turned up numerous air quality violations, according to the state Department of Environmental Conservation.

An inspection last fall showed 18 air quality violations, including knowingly operating and failing to report equipment that exceeded emission limits and failure to conduct monitoring, the DEC said.

The inspection showed that on at least six occasions testing showed that equipment was out of compliance with emission limits. Cominco ignored notification requirements and continued to operate the equipment in violation of the permit.

Cominco also failed to conduct required monitoring on certain pieces of equipment and failed to report required information needed by DEC to evaluate compliance.

DEC said Cominco conducted emission tests on two generators that showed carbon monoxide exceeded limits. Cominco continued to operate the generators in violation of permit limits.

The agency said Cominco also failed to report required information used to evaluate compliance with sulfur dioxide limits on 67 pieces of equipment.
