KODIAK (AP) -- A 19-year-old crewman aboard a fishing boat drowned near Kodiak, Alaska State Troopers said Sunday.
The man was identified as Joshua Ferguson of Kodiak, a crewman aboard the fishing vessel Heidi Kay.
Troopers got a report Saturday morning that there was a person in the water of the Woody Way Channel. They spotted the man trying to swim to shore, but he disappeared under the water before rescuers could get to him.
A boat from the Kodiak Harbormaster's Office was able to locate the victim tangled in a kelp bed about 100 yards from shore. Efforts to resuscitate Ferguson were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead at Providence Kodiak Island Medical Center.
The Heidi Kay was going from Kodiak to some fishing grounds when Ferguson was noticed missing and the Coast Guard was notified.
