Zuke to travel to Orlando

Mellissa Zuke, 7, of Kenai, will attend the America Model and Talent Convention in Orlando in July.

She is the former Miss Sunburst of 1998.

Students named to honor lists

Sarah E. Guthrie was named to the honor roll at Western Oregon University. She is the daughter of Ted and Marsha Guthrie of Kenai.

Cadet Brett Merrill of Soldotna has been named to the dean's list at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy.

Sterling girl crowned Alaska National Teen-ager

On March 31, the state program for America's National Teen-Ager awarded more than $100,000 in scholarships and prizes to young women of Alaska.

In the senior division, Sondra Mize of Sterling was crowned the new Alaska National Teen-Ager.

She will attend the national competition in July in Opryland USA.

Other winners included Sterling resident Sarah Parker, who was named first runner-up, and Sarah Todd of Soldotna, second runner-up.

In the junior division, Heather Benton of Soldotna was named second runner-up and the winner of the talent award.

Soldotna man joins Navy

Jon A. Smith of Soldotna recently joined the Navy for guaranteed training in the Information Systems Technician Program. He attended Soldotna High School.

Smith joined the delayed entry program and reported to active duty in February, attending basic training at Recruit Training Center in Great Lakes, Ill.

Kenai senior to defend championship

Jerod Kaufman was one of a group of Western Kentucky University engineering students who traveled to Ohio State University recently to defend its championship in a regional steel bridge-building contest.

Students had worked on the project since August. They designed bridges, made calculations, built prototypes, modified designs and fabricated the final product.

Soldotna doctor returns from conference

Dr. Henry Krull recently returned from a week-long conference where he learned the latest techniques in ankle, shoulder and wrist arthroscopy; trauma care; hip, knee and shoulder reconstruction; and treatment of sports injuries. He is a partner of Kenai Peninsula Orthopedics in Soldotna.
