Getting Hooked on Kenai

Posted: Tuesday, April 09, 2002

The Kenai Chamber of Commerce is casting a new program to promote local business called "Get Hooked On Kenai."

According to Chamber executive director Aud Walaszek the idea came out of the new Small Retail Business Committee, "The Committee wanted to give Kenai a new calling card, so we thought it would be exciting to do a Get Hooked on Kenai Map," said Walaszek.

Getting hooked also entails landing a salmon and decorating it, "If you contact the chamber we'll send you information so that you can purchase a blank king salmon reproduction and then it's up to you to decorate it. It's a local decorating contest, you can decorate it yourself or you can go to the Boys & Girls Club or hire an artist to decorate it. Then you display the fish at your place of business, before you know it people will be showing up at your place of business to see your King Salmon and register for our weekly drawing. There will be one drawing every week for 12 weeks. We are even planning a best dressed holiday King Salmon in conjunction with Christmas Comes To Kenai in November," explained Walaszek.

If you are not interested in increasing foot traffic at your place of business you can buy an ad on the map without having to display your fish, or you can donate the fish to your favorite charity. The best of the "Get Hooked On Kenai!" King Salmon will be recognized at The Town & Gown Awards Ceremony. Details on the "Get Hooked On Kenai" program are available at the Kenai Chamber log cabin, or by calling 283-7989.
