Crews work to open Denali Park Road to spring traffic

ANCHORAGE (AP) -- Crews at Denali National Park and Preserve gradually are pushing snow and ice from the park road, preparing for its annual spring opening.

The road currently is open to the Savage River Bridge, at Mile 15.

Visitors are advised to use caution because the road remained icy in places.

''At least three times, our crew has had to backtrack to deal with changing conditions behind them,'' Brad Ebel, a park Road and Trails equipment operator, said in a prepared statement.

Along with spring snowstorms, road crews typically encounter overflow ice and high snowdrifts during the long process of getting the park road ready for buses and vehicle traffic in the warm weather months, officials said.

Shuttle bus service is scheduled to begin May 27 to Toklat at Mile 53. The park road is scheduled to be open to its end at Kantishna, an inholding north of Wonder Lake, on June 8.
