The North Peninsula Recreation Area at Mile 23.5 of the Kenai Spur Highway in Nikiski is a gateway to good times year-round.
· Captain Cook State Recreation Area
Captain Cook State Recreation Area is one of the best-kept secrets on the Kenai Peninsula.
Twenty-five miles north of Kenai, at the terminus of the Kenai Spur Highway, this park offers boating, beachcombing, camping, swimming and wildlife viewing.
Visitors have a variety of options whether it is tenting or parking the RV in the Discovery Campground or taking a beach walk on the shores of Bishop Creek.
Canoeists can access the Swanson River Canoe Trails in the adjacent Kenai National Wildlife Refuge .
· Swimming pool
The Nikiski pool is a recreational heated pool with a slide, hot tub, rain umbrella and depths ranging from 1 to 13 feet. It is open year-round. Pool activities include open swim, lap swim and swim lessons. The facility also is available to rent. For hours and prices, call 776-8472.
The rec center also has activity courts and an exercise room.
· Recreational area
Aside from the pool, the recreational area offers a picnic area open during daylight hours, plus overnight camping for self-contained vehicles.
A multipurpose field can be used for sports requiring large, open spaces and there are outdoor volleyball nets and other equipment that can be checked out at the office. The area also features nature and fitness trails.
