The Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution last week commending local Special Olympians, Samantha Baker, of Kenai, Jolene Clark, of Homer, Shaunti Johnson, Homer, Ivan Megananck, Homer, Chris Tarpey, Seward, and Robert Wilusz, of Kenai for their award winning efforts in the 2001 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Anchorage. The Resolution recognized the hard work and hours of training that paid off with six gold and numerous other medals for the six athletes from the Kenai Peninsula. The World Winter Games brought together athletes from around the world and provided inspiration to us all to be the best we can be said Mayor Bagley.
The 2001 Special Olympic World Winter Games were held in Anchorage with 1,528 athletes representing over 80 nations. Six of the 58 athletes representing Alaska were from the Kenai Peninsula.
