Betty Elizabeth Culpepper

Posted: Saturday, April 10, 2010

Longtime Kenai resident Betty Elizabeth Culpepper died Wednesday, April 7, 2010 at Central Peninsula Hospital with her family by her side. She was 71.

A celebration of life was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 10, 2010 at the Trinity Christian Center, 37710 Kenai Spur Highway. Pastor Sherry Morris officiated. A gathering followed the services at the church. Mrs. Culpepper's cremated remains will be scattered at a later date in Louisiana.

Mrs. Culpepper was born Dec. 13, 1938 to Simon Paul and Helen Irene (Allen) Walsworth in Jonesboro, La. She graduated high school from Quitman High School as a valedictorian and furthered her education by attending LSU and Louisiana Tech. She also attended Art classes at Kenai Peninsula College.

Mrs. Culpepper moved to Alaska in August of 1977. She lived in Nikiski until 1990, and then moved to Kenai where she has lived ever since. Betty was employed by Tri-State Oil Tool in the accounting department prior to moving to Alaska. She held various employment positions in Alaska until passionately pursuing sewing, quilting, fiber art and anything that piqued her creative curiosity. She was baptized in the early 70s in Minden, La.

Her family wrote, "Mom was in Alaska for over 30 years, but she never abandoned her southern heritage so she could be tough, loving, and a little ornery as the situation warranted. We thank her for all the love she gave us thru our lives. She will always be with us because she is not gone. A part of her lives in all of us. She passed on her talents and love for cooking to her entire family. We learned that it's only took a glob of this and a dab to make a loving family."

She is survived by her husband of 52 year, BJ "Buck" Culpepper of Kenai; daughters, Marsha Dillon and her husband, Rod of DeSoto, Texas and Kimberly King of Soldotna; grandson, Bryan Payne of Tempe, Ariz.; granddaughters, Brandy Payne of Dallas, Texas, Karri Hutchings and her husband, Shea of Soldotna; great-grandsons, Kaiden Wilshusen of Soldotna, Deakin Hutchings of Soldotna, and Atticus Morris of Dallas; brother, Paul Walsworth and his wife, Shirley of Quitman, La; and nephews, Clint, Matt and Tim Walsworth of Louisiana.

She was preceded in death by her parents, step father, James Howard and special Aunt, Martha Walsworth.

Arrangements were made by Peninsula Memorial Chapel.
